Q1. Who is Commerce Energy?

In 2008, Commerce Energy was acquired by Universal Energy Group. Following that, in 2009, Universal Energy Group was acquired by Just Energy Income Fund. The Principals of the organization have in excess of 100 years of combined experience in the energy industry and are responsible for aggregating over two million customer contracts since the beginning of deregulation.

Q2. Is Commerce Energy licensed?

Commerce Energy has been approved and licensed as an Electric and/or Natural Gas Marketer in all States advertised on this website.

Q3. Are you affiliated with a local utility?

Commerce Energy is not affiliated with any local utility company.

Q4. What causes electricity prices to rise?

Electricity prices are determined by the competitive forces of supply and demand. The short-term or spot price can fluctuate significantly from day to night, season to season, weekday to weekend. For instance, if one generation facility is out of service in the middle of a heat wave, our demand for electricity can easily exceed our supply capacity, and we have to import electricity from neighboring regions, which affects the short-term price of electricity. Longer-term electricity prices are determined by factors like population and economic growth and environmental policies (i.e., shutting down coal fired power plants).

Q5. What causes natural gas prices to rise?

Natural gas prices in the producing regions of North America are determined by the competitive forces of supply and demand. The short-term or spot price fluctuates daily due to several factors, including weather and short-term disruptions. For instance, a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, or a snap deep freeze in Western Canada, two of the largest gas producing regions, can affect the short-term price of natural gas. Longer-term gas prices are determined by population and economic growth and by factors such as environmental policies.

Q6. How do I benefit by signing with Commerce Energy?

If you sign up for a fixed-rate service plan, there is no risk of your electricity and/or natural gas commodity price increasing during the term of your agreement. As in the past, your local utility company delivers your electricity or gas and provides 24-hour emergency service. They will also provide service related to your meter. There is no cost to enroll.

Q7. If I choose Commerce Energy as my supplier, will I receive my utility bill from you?

Your bill will come directly from your local utility company as it has in the past. Once your application has been accepted by Commerce Energy, our name will appear on your bill as your electric and/or natural gas supplier. Cost of delivery, transportation of energy and other meter-related costs are charged by your local utility and will appear as separate charges on your bill statement.

Q8. How do I cancel this agreement?

You can cancel at any time from entering into an Agreement with Commerce Energy. Please refer to your Terms and Conditions for specific details and the course of action applicable to your state. The actual cancellation date is determined by the utility and depends on your meter bill cycle.

Supply and Demand

The available natural gas supply and the demands on that supply - particularly due to seasonal needs - have direct impact on your bill. When surpluses are high, it's a good time to lock in a more competitive rate.

Even better, use compact fluorescent light bulbs. They cost more than old fashioned light bulbs, but can use 75% less electricity and last longer. One compact fluorescent bulb can save you several times its cost in electricity.

Cooling Off

Turn off the AC when you leave for the day. Contrary to popular belief, this method uses less electricity than having the AC constantly maintain a cool temperature! Your savings can easily pay for the cost of a thermostat (as little as $50) in the first year by varying the temperature just a few degrees at night or when you're away. Just think of the savings over 5 or 10 years!
